As a nail technician, you are faced with a couple of options. You can rent a space in an existing salon, Rent a building and start your own salon or you can do what I did and start building your business from home.

Working from home can be great as you choose your own time, you don’t have to pay for extra rent and utilities, you are in the comfort of your own home, and you can have a lot more overall flexibility when it comes to things like your children. It is however very important to form healthy habits when working from home. It can be very easy to fall into the trap of unhealthy habits and routines.

In this article, I am going to outline my experience in working from home as well as some habits and routines I had to follow and form to not only have a successful professional life but also a successful personal life.

Try to plan out your day before hand

I know this can be hard sometimes as a day can suddenly change and leave all your plans in shards. But it is however very important to have a basic outline of what you want to achieve for the day. I Book all my clients form 8 am, so from 6 to 8 am I have time to get things done for the day, as in exercise, cleaning, doing laundry, etc.

Sometimes I might only have bookings starting from the afternoon, or I might have a day off. I usually use those days to get exceptionally more done than on regular days, as I have more time so then I can thoroughly clean my house, run errands and work on other projects like my blog and YouTube videos.

By planning out my days I limit the amount of stress I experience. This also allows me to be more relaxed throughout my day as I have a rough idea of everything that I’ve done and that still has to be done. This makes me feel a lot more accomplished and put together.

I find that it is quite imperative to leave space for change in your planning. As I mentioned before, things can happen and change drastically. So make sure your plans are not structured in such a way that a minor change will ruin your entire day.

Healthy breakfast on table

Eat breakfast

This might seem obvious or cliché, but it is a habit that I feel is very necessary especially in this line of work. I struggle with a bit of low blood sugar, so if I skip only one meal I end up feeling tired, jittery and unmotivated. Therefore I have to make sure that I not only eat the most important meal of the day but that I also leave time in-between clients for needed snacks and meals.

Whether you can go for hours without a meal or are like me that have to snack often, it is still a good habit to follow. Your body needs nourishment and not properly taking care of yourself will only cause problems in the long run.

Working from home makes this easy as you can meal prep and just grab a snack when you have time in-between appointments.

Woman stretching

Exercise

I am really not one for exercising. I really wish I enjoyed it and couldn’t wait to start my day so that I could exercise. Unfortunately, it’s nothing like that. I seriously dislike anything related to exercise. Unfortunately for me, my metabolism isn’t as fast as it used to be and I can no longer eat and do whatever I want without my body retaliating in return.

Whether you like it or not, exercise is a very healthy habit to follow in your daily life. Not only does it help in this line of work as stretching will really benefit you when you have to sit for long periods of time. But exercise promotes a healthy lifestyle and is a great way to start your day.

Something that is also great is having a stretching routine after a long day of work. I find that a good stretch really helps with neck and back pain which are both a result of looking down when working with nails all day.

Get chores done before you start seeing clients

I really like the idea of having an overall tidy and neat home when I am done working. That is why I try my best to get as much done before I start my day with clients as possible. Things I absolutely have to get done before my first client comes through the door, are making my bed, cleaning the kitchen, tidying up the house and possibly doing some laundry.

This really boosts my morale as I not only feel like I have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time, but it really helps to come into a clean home when you are tired after a long day of work. No one still wants to deal with dirty dishes after hours of working. I can then usually relax and start with dinner and finish a few other chores that I might not have had time for in the morning at my own pace.

Leave time in between clients to take care of your needs

It is imperative to leave time in between bookings. I already spoke about the hygiene factor. Hygiene is not the only thing you have to worry about. Like I mentioned above you have to take care of yourself and make sure you get proper nourishment, in-between clients. Even though being a nail tech is not an excessively physical job, it can still be exhausting and draining. Drinking enough water is also very important for your overall health.

Other than eating and drinking, getting up every hour or so is very important as sitting for long periods of time can cause blood clots to form and can potentially life-threatening.

So make time for yourself and your needs, go for a stroll in your garden as it is important to get some fresh air when working with chemicals all day.

Make time for family

When working from home you can easily lose track of time and end up working very late. Even though long hours are needed for building a successful business, you still have to make time for your family and those close to you.

When working from home you can easily lose track of time and end up working very late. Even though long hours are needed for building a successful business, you still have to make time for your family and those close to you.

I try to make a point of it to not take clients after a certain time in the evening except if it’s an emergency. This allows me to spend some time with my husband after he gets home from work. Don’t pour so much into your business that you have nothing left to give your loved ones.

Set boundaries

It can become quite easy for people to forget that even though you have a home-based business, it is still a business. Some people might become too comfortable and push boundaries, which is why it is very important to set boundaries from the get-go. If you don’t want your clients to go into your house or to allow their children to roam freely say so from the get-go. Otherwise, you might feel uncomfortable and offended when someone does something you don’t like. It has to always be clear that your space is a place of business and your clients should respect it at all times.

People are also obliged to think that seeing as you work from home you have unlimited time. Be very clear about time and appointment scheduling. You should not tolerate “no-call no-show” or late clients, except if they have a valid explanation. Your time is valuable and should be respected. If you don’t set the necessary boundaries people will take chances and walk over you. Don’t allow people to abuse your good graces.
